What makes shit unacceptable while excrement is just another word? Its a strange type of bigotry that shows intolerance towards a word as being inherently offensive yet complete indifference to its definition.

See, I see it just the other way around. I like that the offensiveness of a word is another fundamental property of a word, not merely a result of its semantic definition.
It's like another grammatical category or property, like mood, voice, tense, etc. I think it provides for a richer structure, instead of having fewer properties for words.
