The Rosetta stone is a Ptolemaic-era artifact, in other words from sometime between 300 and 31 BC. It is being used as a basis for deciphering hieroglyphs from as far back as the pre-dynastic age ( c 3500 BC). For the sake of argument it is being used to read writings that are 3,000 year old.
If someone today were to use a transciption of a Hip-Hop album to translate the Venerable Bede they would be using modern English to translate the language as it existed 1,300 years ago. And this would still be less than half the length of time that the Rosetta Stone is being asked to cover.
