Right after that, he says that we now know that treating humans like commodities is wrong. So the Bible: Slavery is a-okay! And modern society: Slavery is very, very wrong.
I take this to mean their is a seperation between what 'we' were doing in the those days as being different than what the bible condones. I see it this way because slaves were not "commodities" they have a very strict rights and laws governing how slaves were to be treated. There are nor were their any laws concerning the 'rights' of commodities.
Pat Chose His words very carefully, and if the clip was not edited short i am sure we would have saw him tie the precepts together... Matter of fact when I just googled it Pat was being slamed for condoning slavery and speaking out against an old recounting of a slave revolt, to defend what the bible says about slavery.

Again, not a big fan of Pat, but I am less of a fan of out and out slander.
If you are being bought and sold against your will doesn't that make you a commodity?
You say that there are or were no laws concerning the 'rights' of commodities. I say that animals are commodities and the Bible has laws concerning the treatment of animals "don't muzzle the ox while it's threshing" (paraphrased from my memory but used frequently enough in church that you ought to know it) and there are others. As for the rights of slaves (a commodity because they were bought and sold against their will) this has already been addressed. Thank you (I forgot your username) for doing this.
As for Pat Robertson and the Hati slave revolt comment he made, that had nothing to do with the video I posted. Specifically in the video I posted Pat Robertson was answering a viewer question. I will grant you one thing though, the video was cut short.
Back to the slavery issue: The Bible condones slavery, and we now think that any form of slavery, whether the slaves had some rights or not, is bad. But the Bible also condones selling your own daughter into sex slavery. Our society considers this nightmarishly horrible and immoral. Here's a wonderful link about slavery and the Bible and the rights these commodities had. http://blessedatheist.com/2010/11/03/god...nd-profit/ . I'm not impressed, I also note that female slaves had less rights than male slaves. Her body was the property of her master who could do whatever he wanted to do to her against her will. This is just sick. Where can I puke?
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise
