and the Bible has laws concerning the treatment of animals "don't muzzle the ox while it's threshing" (paraphrased from my memory but used frequently enough in church that you ought to know it) and there are others.

Again, Animals are livestock.

Back to the slavery issue: The Bible condones slavery,

Yes, but what was happening in America during colonial times or more over what was going on leading up the the civial war was not "condoned slavery" as outlined by scripture. "to kill a Mocking bird" provided scripture that shows what was orginally deemed slavery, was NOT what was going on in America. what was happening in America was 'slavery' by name only.

and we now think that any form of slavery, whether the slaves had some rights or not, is bad.

But the Bible also condones selling your own daughter into sex slavery. Our society considers this nightmarishly horrible and immoral. I'm not impressed, I also note that female slaves had less rights than male slaves. Her body was the property of her master who could do whatever he wanted to do to her against her will. Bottom line the rules concerning female slaves were their for the women who were destined to be slaves. like it or not Slaves were nessary. To trivialize the roles slaves play in the foundation of any 'great nation' is to ignore the vital contributions made by the unsung men and women (and their children) who never see the big picture, or what all of their blood sweat and tears paid for. You are living in the lap of luxuary as the result of slave labor. so when you puke try not to puke on all of those who put you in such a position trivialize their lives their contributions to History.
