The 'picking' has already been done by Mark from the OT. Later people that read this (Matthew, Luke) got confused and thought it must have been literal history and therefore the misunderstanding that Christ was a person was born.

Within the first 6 verses of Mark there are 3 references to the OT. Two of these are directly linked to Elijah. Coincidence? I don't think so.
