I've always seen the issue of slavery in the Bible as being much akin to the indentured servitude in early America only more extreme....not going to go into the OT right now because frankly I don't want to take the time on an issue that is not pressing in the current age. What the Americans and other Western societies did to the African people was not endorsed on the issue of slavery in the Bible as far as I can recollect.
Ephesians 6:9
"And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him."
Yes Paul still does not speak against slavery, but this quote just shows you how little people who claimed to live by the Bible actually read their copies. Same can be said presently for Christians, especially American Christians.
