I was brought up Catholic, and attended Catholic schools. We were encouraged not to actually read the bible, lest we misinterpret or become confused . (really) Besides, that kind of thing tended to end in in tears as the questioner often received a thick ear for impertinence. Instead, we were encouraged to read say 'Imitation Of Christ' or hagiographies of various saints. I got the distinct impression the Church has never forgiven Gutenberg.
The best way to get a teenage boy to do something is tell him he musn't. So naturally I read the bible cover-to-cover. I remember being bored by the begats, pleasantly surprised by "The Song Of Solomon" and thinking the author of Revelations must have been on acid.
