This is part of what drove my interest in history. In history there are facts and there are varying views/interpretations of those facts. The fact that the Union wanted to abolish slavery is viewed by some Southerners' even today as the Union wanting to "destroy" the Southern way of life. When I was first learning about the Civil War it was all in terms of economics. The fact that people were enslaved wasn't even really addressed or acknowledged beyond that the South had discovered this excellent means of free labor and the vile North wanted to deprive them of it.
