The extended version of Return of the King is over 4 hours long and I still would have gladly had it made longer.
So why not make a movie 10 hours long?

I felt the whole thing got bogged down in superfluous background explanations and excessive useage of obscure character's names. That's just my opinon as I know lots of people love it. I did, however, absolutely love The Hobbit, probably because it was a more streamlined story. I am having a hard time figuring out where they'll get three movies worth of material, though.
I also greatly prefer The Hobbit, have an earmarked copy lying around somewhere here
