I've put up barriers in the past to really engaging with any atheists, dismissing them as simply not wanting to be held accountable to a higher power or wanting to be "gods" of their own lives.

The apology was sincere and not intended as a ploy or insult.
Similarly I stand by my assessment of your apology as insulting. Don't tell me you're sorry we heard y'all, or you're sorry that y'all may have exaggerated this or that. If you want to apologize try "whoops, I was wrong, not exaggerating, wrong".
