Atheist and anti-theist are not mutually exclusive, nor does one lead from the other. Just as Secularist can also be religious, so an anti-theist can be religious (as unlikely as that is). Or agnostics and atheists in practice*
I think Hitchens was just being a clever-clogs when he somewhat provocatively said he was an anti-theist. He is an atheist who actively worked against theism, so he was both. Just as Adams called himself a "radical atheist" and Dawkins called for "militant atheism".
* in the sense that most atheists would agree that there is a minuscule possibility that there is a god, and are thus technically agnostic, because their belief in there not being a god is caveated.
