I heard on a nature programme a long time ago, so I can't reference it, that virtually all gibbons have cracked their ribs at one time or another falling from trees. Natural selection will select for risk takers, because these animals are the ones that can exploit change, and change is a constant. Danger is not some thing to shun, it is a thing you can learn to control and use, even if it takes a few cracked ribs on the way.
