Brain damage can definitely change who someone is. You are physically the same person, but mentally, it can alter someone greatly. Everything to do with a person's personality comes down to the brain. The brain conducts consciousness, but is not the source of consciousness. It's like if a lightbulb burns out - you don't get light anymore, because the conductor of light is damaged or destroyed. But that says nothing about the electrical current available in the light socket.
Why do you assume consciousness is already out there, irrespective of their being appropriate brains about to house it? In your example the power potential of your wall socket seems more analogous to life itself or the environmental conditions which make it possible. Consciousness is more like the light bulb, because it is just one of the manifestations which life makes possible. Or if you like, because we value it so highly, perhaps it should be like a plug-in computer? Regardless, life no more depends on consciousness than the power in your outlet depends on that computer. Life goes on and the power potential remains without either one. Leastwise, if you think consciousness is a required for life itself .. I don't see where you've given any support for that position.
