When we do not understand something, it is attributed to god. The sun had a "sun god" at one point, when it rained, there was a "rain" god or a god that was pissed off and if there was a natural disaster, god was pissed off with his followers.
Now, we have technology to analyze these natural occurrences and better understand them and even predict to a certain degree. The god magically disappears.
