For the record, I don't think the right's hate of Obama is entirely about race. The entire GOP isn't racist, but the racists are almost always with the Republican party. However, there's a lot more to it. Truth is, Faux News loves black people..... as long as they're Republican. Look how much they loved Herman Cain even though the guy was clearly in way over his head. Heck, they even made Michael Steele a regular commentator. On the other hand, look what happened to Clinton, a white guy, when he was president. They're more than willing to hate a white guy, as long as he's a Democrat.
The demonization of the left by Republicans, I think it comes from a simpler place: the Republican party has gone off to an extreme; the democrats look more extreme to them because their position has moved so much. I mean, one simple issue to look at is abortion: In 96, the GOP was split over the issue, half of them wanting to keep it legal and the other half wanting it illegal. Now? Now the entire GOP was strictly against it. Birth control didn't even become an issue until less than a year ago, with them falling solidly against it for the first time in forever. Their tax policy is further to the right than even Reagan. Honestly, I've heard political commentators claiming that our politics seem more divided now than any time since the Civil War and it honestly wouldn't surprise me. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Texas or Utah tried to leave the union.
