I think you're mixing party strategy with party-member preferences. There are many pro-life Democrats and many pro-choice Republicans. However the Republican party ties itself to the pro-life position to court the religious-right voting bloc, simply as a political strategy. Likewise the Democrat party ties itself to many special-interest groups to court their voting blocs, simply as political strategy.
