In a war, there are rules of engagement. It is acceptable to kill the enemy if they are trying to kill you. It is not acceptable to kill unarmed civilians, especially if they are your own citizens.
Quote:This cannot be handled like a SWAT team trying to prevent a hostage taker from killing hostages. Sometimes we can and do catch them without killing them. And we certainly do that here when they are on our soil where law inforcement has much more control. We cannot control their movements overseas or surround them like a SWAT TEAM.
Right, and if they are on foreign soil, the foreign government should be contacted for permission to proceed with an operation, or an arrest warrant requested with an extradition treaty. No country has a right to march into another - uninvited - and kill or capture some person, without first making a declaration of war, and even then the prisoner must be treated under the protocols of the Geneva convention.
Quote:If you have a better suggestion I'm all ears. But to suggest that every situation can or should be treated the same is absurd. ESPECALLY when dealing with people in countries we have no control over who want to kill us in the west.
Here's a suggestion: Don't break international law in order to get to someone in another country, whether it is to capture or to kill them.
Quote:I do think that due process is the norm and most certainly it should spread as a civil right in all countries. But the contries we are fighting don't allow us to extract them all the time the way you want.
Boo hoo. Then we don't get what we want, and we have to live with it.
Quote:FYI even on D-DAY our soldiers SHOT unarmed Germans trying to flee with no guns, shot them in the back. I know this because it was part of a memoral in which a soldier told his own story. He hated doing it and did not want to do it. I do not think Obama takes any decision he makes lightly nor would he kill if he knew absolutely he could take them alive.
Now again, if you have better suggestions I am all ears.
A lot of war crimes were committed by both sides in WWII. Shooting unarmed Germans trying to flee would be illegal these days.
