Perhaps I was merely trying to comment on the preposterous nature of assigning such value to them - on the other hand, he's still quoting from a collection of stories from a desert people who wouldn't have seen pearls that often, so I'm pretty sure the value system is still skewed.
That said, I quite like pearls. They're grown, rather than compressed carbon. Diamonds might be a girl's best friend, but there's nothing like seducing your man wearing only candlelight and strands of pearls.
