Sometimes the family isn't even being willfully ignorant about it. I've met parents that just didn't care. When I was younger and still living with my parents, they allowed a friend of mine to stay at their home, becuase he was having trouble with his parents and had been kicked out(which had more to do with my friend's parents inability to properly parent than my friend's behavior). One day when I came from work, I found my friend in my parent's basement slicing himself with a razor blade. I called his parents to tell them what was going on, and his dad said to me, "What do you want me to do about it?". So, I took him myself to get him checked into the psychiatric hospital.
Another friend of mine did have parents that were willfully ignorant, and that ended in a much worse manner. Worse yet, that friend was afraid to talk to his parents about how he felt, because he thought they would have a negative reaction.
I definitely have to give a big chunk of credit to my parents for giving me an amazing amount of support during my struggles.

Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
