They do indeed lose a significant library of games that way.Because the PS3 architecture is so drastically different from that of the PS2, they run into problems.
It comes down to:
- Hardware emulation
- More reliable
- More expensive
Some of the emulation glitches were game-breaking. Things like a complete lack of sound output, or missing colors.
