Where did the "atheists are nazis" myth come from.

Where did the "atheists are nazis" myth come from.
I have heared Bill O`Riley say it and I have heared and read it in various conservative columbs and comments.
And even by some on this forum.

Nazis were atheists.

Which is weird, since as a German I seem to have missed that part of our history lessons at highschool. I didn`t live during that time, but had several members of my family who were not only soldiers but also active members of the SA and some who even were members of the NSDAP.
And every single one of them was devoutly catholic.

Fashism, is very well known to historians to have emerged out of catholic Europe, (Italy, southern Germany, Spain, Croatia,....)
The NSDAP was founded in Bavaria which is catholic German heartland and it was in catholic Germany were the nazis had their biggest base of support.
Hitler was roman catholic and I find that alot of christians point out a part in "Mein Kampf" in which he critizeses Christianity.
But those who point this out, seem to oversee what he critizises, he critizises the devision into protestants and catholics, which in his opinion was a historic disadvantage for "the arian race". He also clearly states that he would be happy to see a resuraction of a "christian age".
I remember being very clearly tought at school that it was mainly from catholic germany that it rose to power and that many catholic and protestant officials had failed to protest.

Jet why has this image that nazis were atheists come to be in the US?

I found a propaganda video on youtube yesterday which was produced by Disney.
In one scene one clearly sees how a cross and a bible in a church are replaced by a "sword with swastiker" and "Mein Kampf".
Which clearly is a distorted image.

Could it be that the historic truths were distorted during the 40s to get more support for the war?
