Allah isn't exactly his problem, his family is because if he tells them that he's dating me, being western and an atheist, they'll never accept me and will end up giving him an ultimatum, me or them |:

However, religion is not a science, it is a club, and because it sets up social norms who we "love" is sold as a meme to the culture. Thus it sets up ideas like pre arranged marriages, fear of interracial marriages or international marriages. (marrying outside your nationality), living in a relationship outside marriage.
Those superstitions get sold as social norms because of human ignorance.
I completely agree with you, religion was fabricated by those in power to control the masses and to this day it's still used that way. Most people are just ignorant and gullible enough to believe them and don't even realize that there's a lot more to the world than what's in their holly books.
