Not invade in the first place.
Also, you skirt your own point. Killing enemy combatants may have been necessary under the eminently avoidable circumstances, but God's marauding murderers didn't stop there. They slaughtered women and children and infants. They went through cities and intentionally hunted down the defenseless. What threat did women and children pose to these trained killers? Not much, if they chose to keep a few of the former as rape slaves.
It had nothing to do with necessity. They went total war on their neighbors because your bloodthirsty God wanted to enjoy the carnage.

That works beautifully in theory. Except, you can only be sure of yourself. You can never be sure that your partner has been celibate, or hasn't contracted the disease in a non-sexual manner, and the Church tells these people that God demands they take that possibly fatal risk because protecting yourself is a sin.
You can say that Church teachings would, if adhered to strictly, reduce AIDS and that would be correct, but in their never-ending quest to thwart human sexuality, they actively seek to restrict access to an equally-effective and much easier source of protection, because to the Church, Catholic dogma is more important than human life, and it is entirely correct to place a large portion of the blame at the ruby-slippered feet of the Pope.
