"Because they are more likely to become doctors" ...wow! How sexist!
Midwives would argue that doctors are less qualified to deal with childbirth.. and from my experience I'd have to agree. So you disagree that women prefer women to assist with every aspect of childbirth??? You disagree with the female role in rearing children? The reason for the distinction is that naturally women understand what another woman goes through having experienced this themselves.
The medical field has (by far and large) been dominated by men since the idea of medicine became manifest. In the last couple decades, the gender ratio in the medical field has been equalizing.
From my mother's experience... I'd have to disagree with you about the midwife thing. I also disagree with preferring a woman to assist a mother to a man assisting... my only care is if the person/people helping the mother know what the hell they are doing. Also, being in a hospital, which has all of the facilities and specially trained professionals that could possibly be needed... is by far superior to having a single individual come to one's home with a handful of tools that they may not be fully trained in the use of.
So yes, I think that midwifery should be abolished. To speak personally: I don't care if it is a man, woman, robot, or whatever 'working on' me... so long as it is going to do what I need it to do, and will not go beyond what I will it to do. We all have to trust those/that which is 'working on' us... trust to you may simply be a matter of gender... but to me it is a matter of ability, experience, and safety. I think it should be the same for everyone (Quality >>>> Appearance)... and would much prefer if others would/could go to a hospital where they can be assured of ability, experience, and safety.
Sadly... our world is so far from great... that even midwifery might be useful and good at times : /

People are born nude... I call that 'nature'.
If it were not for the disgusting distortions of my flesh caused to me by the disease I call 'the Y chromosome'... I would be entirely unabashed by the absence of fake skin on myself... just as I am not offended by fake skin on others.

Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
