Allegory vs. Literal Fact in the Bible
#21
RE: Allegory vs. Literal Fact in the Bible
The Mesha Stele makes specific reference to Omri, king of Israel so there WERE Israelites. Of course, the stele dates from the last half of the 9th century which doesn't help the Conquest bullshit story at all.

Quote:Omri was king of Israel, and oppressed Moab during many days, and Chemosh was angry with his aggressions. His son succeeded him, and he also said, I will oppress Moab. In my days he said, Let us go, and I will see my desire upon him and his house, and Israel said, I shall destroy it for ever.

In addition to this we have a couple of Assyrian inscriptions referring to Omri but nothing prior which suggests that he founded the dynasty in the north at least and not any "David" which will, of course, piss off the fundies but who cares?
