I live in SC, so somewhat. Advertising it isn't safe, I've had friends with atheist decals on their car have them vandalized. I've had repercussions at work, more from people who report to me than people I report to. The idea of being managed by an atheist is very shocking to some people. Not that it's a topic to bring up at work, but I have a tendency to blurt out the truth when asked a direct question, when reflection tells me I should have said it's not something I want to discuss at work. The conversation, as best as I can recollect it:
Her: What church do you go to?
Me: I don't go to church.
Her: But what religion do you belong to?
Me: I'm not very religious.
Her: But you believe in God, don't you?
Me: No.
Her: You mean you're an atheist?
Me: Yes.
Her: But you seem so nice!

Me: I'm not very religious.
