I think the first religions were the result of utter powerlessnes.
Being a stoneage inbreed fucktard who barely managed to not lose a tooth each year and has no knowlege of anything outside his narrow field of actions I would sooner or later start worshiping a wolfgod to prevent wolf packs from ripping me appart.
