Talking to your family about being an Atheist

If jihad is smiling, taking care of granny, and forgiving, then somebody should have told Muhammad and his crew:

Allah's Apostle said: "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle, and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity, so if they perform a that, then they save their lives an property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning (accounts) will be done by Allah." Pretty sure the guy who created the religion, and the guys who spread it after him, were the ones who knew what jihad is supposed to be. Not sure how anybody can read the source material and study the early history and come away with any idea except that armed conflict in the name of spreading Islam is central to the idea of jihad.

People can and do claim otherwise, but they have very little to back it up. Weak hadiths, abrogated verses of the Qur'an, and ignorance of history is what it comes down to.
