The nature of human beings is summed up in "story telling". From the dawn of time, people would gather around camp fires and pass their experiences as stories. You can even see it today. Be it a Hollywood movie, a book or some Amazonian tribe that has never seen a modern man. The problem with story telling, is the "Making of a mountain from a mole" effect. With each iteration, the story is added on to, until the original story is lost. This is what I think happened to all religions as time went on.
Today for example, we are finding that there was no mention of Mohamed's name anywhere in the world for over 300 years after his supposed death! Not a single word written anywhere! (See the documentary "Islam, the untold story"). What does that tell you?
The subconscious seems to know the truth, that death is final and that's why all creatures, including man, are afraid of death.
Being greedy by nature, and not content with a single life, we invent beliefs for the afterlife to extend this life, to last forever. Heaven and hell to reward or punish and so on. Nothing but imagination and story telling at work.
The notion of a soul or spirit is a waste by itself. If we could survive without our body, having a body would be a waste and nature never wastes anything. Also, If God created us in his own image and he is perfect, why reward or punish his own work? Shouldn't he reward or punish himself?
Thank God I'm an atheist.
