They subjugated all the peer powers whose military technology is on par with their own to get to their great empire.

I didn't say the US is great empire because it abused the Indians and took a lot of their land. I say the US became a great empire by becoming powerful enough to easily secure itself with its own resources from any single or plausible combination of other powers, while excerting a dominating economic, military, scientific and cultural power around its world, sort of like Rome.

Only Rome did it for much longer than we are likely to.
