It is compatible with both theism and atheism. Which is why there would be 4 categories:
"I believe in god(s) and know there is one" Gnostic Theists
"I believe in god(s) but have no knowledge on the matter" Agnostic Theists
"I don't believe in god(s) but have no knowledge on the matter" Agnostic Atheist
"I don't believe in god(s) and know aren't any" Gnostic Atheists
There might be a fifth category as well
"I have no knowledge on the matter and hold no beliefs" - Agnostic [we need a new word here].
