It has a certain purpose, it doesn't exist so that some people can use it in order to normalize their otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour.

Define socially unacceptable behaviour.

Although a very broad term that also includes theft, murder, slander, and generally disturbing the peace by either making noise, or behavior such as throwing eggs at bypassers, I especially speak of public exposure of what is deemed to be abhorrent in public eyes.
And you can't really tell me that the public doesn't think that homosexuality is anything but abhorrent. This fact has been covered numerous times in the media, and the fact that words such as gay, homo, and other more vulgar expressions are used as profanity speaks for the fact that homosexuality is not accepted by the public. Any and all displays in public regarding homosexuality are considered to be as such. This also includes the legitimization of the said behavior. As you cannot legitimize indecent exposure of single individuals, you cannot legitimize the exposure of multiple ones, and have the state recognize their behavior on the top of that. Doing this will certainly incure the wrath of the public.

It was once considered socially unacceptable for interracial couples to legally marry, but that was merely due to the socially ignorant perceptions of religious idiots like you who have no valid basis for denying marriage legality to particular couples.

Just as the argument of "infertile couples" the argument of "interracial couples" is not really applicable.
Interracial couples, heterosexual of course, will always enjoy a lot more acceptance from the public since the reaction against them is founded on a different basis. No one is really contesting the fact that there are interracial homosexual couples, for the "interracial" factor is immidiately overruled by the fact that the couple is a homosexual couple. No matter what you do, you can't change this fact.
