Even though the claim that god doesn't exist cannot be "proven", it has a lot to do with the evolving idea of a god, and the fact that you can't really pin it down to one definition for everyone.
Even though it has yet to be proven, it has more supporting evidence than the opposite claim that god exists. Simply because so many gods have been created and found to be false and because there has been no positive prove of god at all. When a being is said to have an effect on earth, as it is, and this effect cannot be found, it's more far fetched to conclude this being exist than to lean towards this being doesn't exist.
theists and anti-theists are not standing on the same level when it comes to which has more supporting evidence for their claim.
