There could be multiple factors. I've met Dawkins and seen him debate numerous times, and generally hes very abrasive (rightly or wrongly), but clearly knows his stuff.
It could have been an attempt to criticise the seeming prevailing attitude towards some religious practices here in the UK (a de facto discourse unegalitarian [sic] tolerance), or maybe someone made a comment to him that is hitherto unknown (at least to me) and his wanting to respond got the better of him.
Or he could have been trolling in his own unique way. Maybe he's writing a new book on a similar subject and wanted to test the water on a topic. Regardless, and alluding to my
Point earlier, sometimes Dawkins says stuff in RL that requires you to read between the lines. Still, comes across terribly on twitter regardless.
Maybe he just didn't think the outcome would be what it was/is. Seems that aside the talk of him, the issue of Islam and 'race' is the predominant topic of discussion.
