There is no national image too shameful for the ultra-religious. They believe everyone else has problems by looking down on them.

It's still a false generalization. There are many people in the south that realize that racism is wrong, but there are enough racist assholes that it makes its way into legislation and much of that seems to be concentrated in the south.
