Wonder what ever happened to the Sumerians? They didn't speak a Semitic language either did they?
Sumarian was not a semitic language. But descendants of sumerians gradually adopted Akkadian, a Semitic language, as their vernacular. Sumarian language itself was retained as language of learning and education, sort of like Latin and Greek today, until interest in learning and education was swept away by Christianity and Islam.
