This, unfortunately, is part of the problem. It's certainly an outrage, but to imply that such travesties are against the spirit of Christianity is abjectly false. It's a direct command from God to Moses. It's one of the rules they are supposed to follow. Why should it shock us when, occasionally, some of them do?
The blame ultimately rests upon the belief system which officially sanctions such atrocities.
