Thats because viruses that cause these illnesses and disease, change through mutation. They evolve. Thats why we don't have a cure for the common cold. So the only way medical science will make progress in your eyes, is if it eradicates illness altogether. You really aren't in the real world are you?

Yes, life is a lot better today. People died in their 40s back then from illnesses and diseases that could have been easily cured if only they were as advanced as we are today.
