I believe there are actually some statistics which support the notion that the U.S. has become more religious over time since its beginnings, and in a big way....
I suppose that depends how we define religion. Strict adherence to a specific religion vs. deism vs. "spiritual but not religious" vs. non religious or spiritual in any sense of the word and all the others in between. All might give you a very different picture of how religion has grown/shrunk over time.
