My dad was a big believer in discipline for faults real and imagined. Not to the point where I was beaten senseless or anything, just trying to avoid spoiling the child, I guess.

Treating children like they're stupid and inferior to you is a great way to ensure that they're going to misbehave. Again, you hit your kids because you failed to teach proper behavior by example when they were most impressionable and, like a good Christian, you're taking it out on them.
