Plus if you do it right a few times when they are young (unless your son or daughter is working with a box of rocks for common sense) your word is all that is needed to make things happen.

You make my case better than I ever could. Persuasion, for fundamentalists, should be unthinking. Obedience is the goal, not understanding. Everyone should fall in line with the great chain of command. *holds nose*

understanding of what? leftist propaganda? what are you looking to replace disipline with? The current philosphy that has our eastern 'allies' position themselves to take what our subsequent generations built for us?

This hippy philosphy is great if the world would adopt it, but the cold truth is why you let your gaurd down and teach your children to do the same Mama Fong stands over her kids with a stick, and smacks them when they make stupid calculus mistakes the other 9 years olds don't seem to have a problem with. In a global market who is going to be hired (who will be in a position to do the hiring) your hippy son who has a great live and let live life philosphy, or Mr.Fong who was over qualified for a given job when he was 15?

If the Mr. Fongs of the world hold all the jobs, then what will happen to the hippy sons and daughters who have adopted your philosphy? I guess that will truly be up to the Mr. Fongs of the world won't it. If it makes you feel any better From what I know of the culture our daughters will have an easier time finding a place in their soceity than our sons will.

My dad was a big believer in discipline for faults real and imagined. Not to the point where I was beaten senseless or anything, just trying to avoid spoiling the child, I guess.

It didn't make me respect him. He never got my respect until he earned it.

Treating children like they're stupid and inferior to you is a great way to ensure that they're going to misbehave. Again, you hit your kids because you failed to teach proper behavior by example when they were most impressionable and, like a good Christian, you're taking it out on them.

2/3rds of the current world population does not seem to agree.
Maybe they are all wrong and the 5 to 10% who are falling by the way side are right.
