Frankly I wouldn't have thought a discussion about child rearing habits would fall so neatly along theist/atheist lines. In and of itself, a little swat before children are able to talk might not be so horrific. But I think the fanatical emphasis on corporal punishment as an unqualified positive is what sets the religiously retarded apart. I have to feel sorry for Christians who show such contempt for their own and their children's humanity that they feel it is necessary to beat them into submission.
For myself, I don't find it advantageous to beat a dog to train it, how in the world could it possibly be so for a human? There are times when you need to show yourself to be the boss in relation to a dog, but beating plays no part in that. Completely unnecessary and it destroys trust.
What disgusts me most is the unthinking manner in which Christian's such as sinners and drich embrace force and cruelty because they read it as god's will. It is god's will to break their children's will even as their own was broken by their poor, primitive parents before them. I couldn't stand to be fundamentalist Christian for a day much less an eternity. So very pathetic.
