They believed witches existed. They believed "God" caused outbreaks of disease as punishment. They have been so consistently wrong that there is no reason to trust their word about anything. The problem is that people have this dreck pounded into their heads from a very young age. There is also tremendous pressure on the kids to believe what mommy and daddy believe. Not to mention that society expects them to believe this guff. When everyone around you is of one like mind it is difficult to go against the grain. And the younger you are, the more this is true.
Indeed. What reason is there to believe what they say? They have a large history of blood and contradictions. It wasn't religion that first explained how lighting works. It was not religion that developed better medicine. It was not religion that sent us to the moon. So far religion has only played one role. Personal belief. It is nothing more than a pile of personal beliefs that carry no weight. There is a reason why religion targets children. They are easy to fool. Easy to brainwash. Children who do not know enough of the world to think for themselves and question what they are being taught. Anyway if religion is as true as it claims to be then why doesn't it allow questioning and criticisms. Why result to empty threats like hell? If it's true then why don't they allow people to question it? Surely if it's true those who question will find out eventually.
Also one other thing. Who is harmed by disbelief? No one. So why is it needed for you to go to hell for endless immoral torture? Rules and laws only make sense when made through reason and this is far beyond reason and more deep into insanity.

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.
Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.
You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.
