Socialism is the workers owning the means of production. Socialism isn't necessarily opposed to private ownership of the means of production. Some socialists like Benjamin Tucker superted preserving private property & merely redistributing it among the workers.

Why would you want to abolish private property?

So that everyone can have access to the means of production.
