I think it's a valid question, actually. This life is meaningless and this world is ephemeral according to their belief system. It's all about the supposed afterlife. What's the point in hanging around?
I think, deep down, it indicates that even the most faithful don't trust God's promises enough to proactively find out if they are legitimate.
I was taught growing up as a Christian that there were different levels in heaven. "Good Christians" would get the fancy houses and all the nice stuff. "Bad Christians" would get crappy houses or be the equivalent of being homeless in heaven. Basically, if you're a bad Christian, heaven would suck compared to everyone else and you'll just be spending eternity thinking "well, at least I'm not in hell!"
