Do you mean because they're so obviously exploitative? One has to question whether anyone at the highest levels could possibly believe in the snake oil they sell.
But aside from their desire to separate people from their money and fill their heads with utter bullshit .. is there another reason for calling them evil?

Sounds like part of their appeal is like that of Mormonism. There is opportunity for advancement, a chance to become more. They're both either reading to much sci-fi/fantasy or too little.
