Actually, I think they'd be just fine without their religion. They just say this so they can feel morally superior. Just my view. I may be wrong.
In my experience, these are usually people who have very little grasp of morality, and need rules they can follow. Ironically, they assume everyone to be the same, and in need of the same guidance.
