I'm sure your parents are nice people. At least they've been nice to you, so far. If you ever tell them you're gay or you're an atheist, that might change really quick.
Anyway, just because they're nice doesn't mean they're correct. In fact, sometimes telling a lie is easier than telling the truth. Lies can be very comforting. But just because they're comforting doesn't make them any more true.
