I have no problem with such memorials, provided that they are erected by individuals not using public funds, aren't traffic hazards and are removed if they become an unmaintained eyesore.
If anything, they serve as practical reminders to pedestrians of dangerous sections of road. There's a dangerous blind curve on the back way to my country property - for some reason people insist on waking on the dangerous blind inside of the curve. Every so often, theres a new memorial representing another fatality.
