I think the crosses are fine. They serve as both a memorial and more importantly, a warning. Although used as a religious symbol people should remember what a cross also is in a secular sense, an instrument of death used by the Romans. To me another symbol isn't quite as shocking or obvious as a cross. Maybe it causes a drunk driver to pull over and sleep it off.
